Friends, this is how you, yes you, can get started in Soul Journaling. I sent a set of the materials to my mom, who I know will use them. Dear Mom, this post is for you. Everything I learned about Soul Journaling started with Linda Bergh. If you happen to be in Minneapolis, take a class with Linda Bergh!
You do not need to have any artistic skills.
It’s in a private journal. Noone else has to see this.

Click on the book “Drawn to Nature” (above). This book will help you get started, provide you with inspiration and make this style of journaling accessible.
Yes, the materials are magic.
The Micron 05 black pen.
The magic happens. First outline a sketch. Or write a word or two from a poem. Or a thought. ANY thought. Just start. Then play with the Pentel water color brush pen to put some color on the page. I’ll try to supply some examples from friends so you can see more (If you have one, email me a photo of your journal page.)
Get the Supplies
Go to an artists supply store like Art Materials or Blick. Buy 4 things.
- Strathmore Art Journal: Mixed Media paper. The 5.5 in x 8.5 in size works great for putting into a purse. The paint box is a complementary size.
- Set of watercolor paints.
- A Pentel watercolor travel brush.
- A Pigma brand Archival Ink Micron 05 black pen. This ink will not run when you paint water colors over it. It also makes a nice stroke on the page without bleeding.
The materials make all the difference in your drawing success.
My First Attempt
I just got started after my first class with Linda Bergh. Here’s my first two pages.
So, let go that inner judge. You can learn to make beautiful things. It’s only important to start now!
