*UPDATE 10/14/2016 My sources of folate are: a diet rich in leafy greens and a multivitamin. The brand I’m currently taking is Thorne Research 2/Day. I take one at breakfast with a 50mg dose of 5htp, and again both at 2:00 p.m. I also take magnesium glycine and taurine. All of these together are the core of my “calm and happy” nutrient supplementation. CAUTION: Before taking 5-HTP, Tryptophan or any other amino acids therapeutically, please educate yourself. These are concentrated forms of substances that we get in our food, but they should be treated with the same caution and care as with any medicine. Do not take serotonin-building supplements if you have plenty of serotonin. Just like taking an SSRI when not needed, or overdosing on an SSRI, if you end up with too much serotonin in your body you can get Serotonin Syndrome. It’s not pretty. I have a close relative to whom this happened. And, I was very surprised that it happened. I guessed that person was low in serotonin and he/she was not, which we found out when he/she took 5-HTP and got serotonin syndrome (and had previously had it from taking SSRI prescribed by a doctor… twice.) And, you need also learn about the very specific types of moods that indicate which neurotransmitters are low. If you are diligent, you can learn what substances are options to treat your symptoms. With 5-htp, you start with a low dose and work slowly up as you monitor your symptoms.
